Waikahe ‘Olu Trout Unlimited is the local chapter of Trout Unlimited Organization. Trout Unlimited is a non-profit organization. We dedicate ourselves to the restoration of wild rainbow trouts on the island of Kauai, Hawaii.
The rainbow trout, generally known as trout, is a species of Salmon. It is native to the coldwater tributaries of the Pacific Ocean. Waikahe ‘Olu Trout Unlimited aims to assist in the conservation, protection, and restoration of our country's coldwater fisheries and their watersheds.
Waikahe 'Olu Trout Unlimited conducts various full-scale resources and programs to aid our movement.
We are always looking for new members.
Sportsman Deane Gonzalez, our current Treasurer and Secretary, is a founding member of the Waikahe 'Olu Trout Unlimited Hawaii Chapter.
A Life Devoted to the Outdoors!
Sportsman Deane [Gonzalez] was born in Hollywood in 1944 to a military family. As a young child he traveled throughout the United States, finally settling with his parents in their home state of Pennsylvania at the age of twelve. He spent the next six years learning to hunt, fish, trap, dive and survive in the outdoors.
Deane graduated from Penncrest High School in 1962. Twelve days later, at the age of seventeen, he joined the US Navy. In 1963, Deane was trained in underwater explosives and stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He spent a lot of time in and out of submarines. Honorably discharged in 1965, Deane remained in Hawaii. He worked as a lifeguard for the City & County of Honolulu while attending college and he graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in 1972.
He followed his passion and purpose of the outdoors and began a long-standing career in fishing and hunting throughout all of the Hawaiian Islands.
His personal favorite is Kauai, revered for its fresh water streams, wild mountains and lush tropical interior. At the age of 73 (don’t worry, he still outpaces most), he now spends his time with the Waikahe 'Olu Trout Unlimited Chapter #403, still fishing, hunting, leading and educating those that want an outdoor experience not available in the guide books!
If you have any questions or want to know more about Sportsman Deane and his adventures or how you can become a member of Waikahe 'Olu Trout Unlimited Hawaii Chapter or experience Kauai with a personalized adventure, email him @ [email protected] for more information.

Kokee Stream Restoration Project Nov 2019
This November 2019 video shows our last efforts at the Kokee Stream Restoration Project before the Pandemic shut down our efforts. You can see the Kokee Stream as we worked to open it up and the hard "hands-on" work we have done.
Deane Gonzalez Treasurer, Trout Unlimited chapter #403
Ray Arguello, a Trout Unlimited member from Idaho was spending time in Hawaii and contacted me inquiring about the Wild Hawaiian Rainbow Trout we have in Hawaii.
I invited him to join me on Kauai, stay at our cabin in Kokee and see for himself what it was really like to fish for Wild Rainbow Trout on Kauai. This is his story.
Deane and friends fishes the upper Wailua River on Kauai for Small Mouth Bass in an area we have to cut trail to get to.
Nobody had been back there in years and then they fish a section of the Kauaikenana Stream for Wild Rainbow Trout. Great bass and trout action filmed in areas that are off the grid and tourists rarely ever get to.
