I was up at the Rice Cabin in Kokee from January 13th to the 22nd. I had 5 days of perfect weather and 3 days of non-stop rain when a front moved over the island.
One morning the temperature on the outdoor gage was 30 degrees. We had frost all over the ground.
One day I hiked up the Kauaikenana stream to the “Nursery pool” to check on our smaller wild Hawaiian trout. I counted approximately 15 trout in that pool and put a GoPro camera in there to get a video on their movements.
I am going to be in New Zealand from February 5th through the 7th of March with members of our Trout Unlimited Chapter. The “virus” prevented us from making this trip for the past 2 years. We are looking forward to again fishing the rivers and lakes on the North Island near the town of Turangi. There are videos on our Trout Unlimited web page @ https://tuhi.org/video-page/ from previous trips to this country you may enjoy viewing. Our Kiwi fishing friends are waiting for our arrival. We will be doing a float on the Mohaka River, fishing Lake “O” and going to see the Glow Worm Caves. The house I rent on the Tongararo rivers sleeps 8 and it is from this location, that we go off on our expeditions of exploration. In other words, we fish till we drop. AND…the trout in New Zealand are huge wild Browns and Rainbows.

Our cabin in Kokee provides us with a perfect location to hike, explore and fish on that island. Once I’m back from New Zealand my next trip to Kauai will be April 1st through the 10th. Also, The Hawaii Historic Arms Association will be holding their “Gun Show” on March 18th – 19th, 2023. Normally, prior to the pandemic we attended this event with 2 display booths for our Trout Unlimited Honolulu chapter. I will be off island during this time and not able to set up and man the booths. IF we are going to have a presence at the “Gun Show,” somebody is going to have to step-up-to-the-plate and take on this responsibility. Who is up to the challenge?
