There is a lot of News to relay to our chapter members since I lasted posted a blog.
First the sad news, one of our founding members of our Hawaii Trout Unlimited chapter is gone.
Louie DeNolfo aka “Louie Da Fish” has passed, and we will miss him greatly. Louie was “one-of-a-kind,” I ever knew could handle a fly rod like Louie. We spend some great times together fishing the rivers and lakes of New Zealand. Just about everything I learned about fishing those waters came from Louie. He was a lovable corrector who was a skilled carver and nobody could play the harmonica like he could. I remember hearing him “Jamming” at an event at a bar on Lake Taupo. He left us way too soon, Lake “O” will never be the same without him.
On a brighter side, three members of our Trout Unlimited chapter here in Honolulu went on a “road trip,” Donna and Deane Gonzalez and John Bennett spent 16 days fishing their way through Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho. We fished the Big Horn River, Shoshone River, Snake and Gray’s Rivers and did 5 float trips in total. We all caught some nice trout, but John Bennett out did us all with several Brown and Rainbow trout all 24 inches or bigger, depending on who you talk too.
We covered a lot of miles in those 16 days. Saw a lot of wild life in Yellowstone National Park, took in some tourist sights in Jackson Hole, Wyoming and visited the Grand Teton’s National Park. Spent some time on the Crow Indian Reservation in Montana, visited the Buffalo Bill museum in Cody, Wyoming and fished Alpine Lake in the mountains near the Bear Tooth Pass. Beautiful country and we can’t wait until we can plan another trip, maybe in June of 2023. Trout Unlimited members in our chapter should really get in on these trips.
Which reminds me, New Zealand, North Island, I have a rented a house in Turangi on the Tongararo River from February 7th – March 7th. 2023. I have 4 TU members signed up. The house sleeps 8 and has all the convenience’s you would need, and being less than 30 yards from the river! You can drink a beer with one hand and fish with the other. Members interested in joining us email me @ [email protected] and I’ll give you the details.
I was also up in Kauai at the Kokee cabin from September 29th – October 8th. We had perfect weather except on October 1st, when we woke up to thunder and lighting storm that dumped buckets or rain and raddled the cabin with claps of thunder. It was the worst storm I have ever seen up in Kokee. Luckily we did NOT lose any power and within an hour the storm passed over head, by 3 pm the sun was out – amazing.
I did not do any fishing, but I hunted 4 days for Black Tail Deer with 2 buddies. Unfortunately, no venison on this trip.
